In order for the whole process to work, and for the various systems to be able to communicate with each other, standard ways of creating and modeling the data was required. These documents discuss guidelines for tagging directories and converting them to GIS-ready files.

Boston Streets: Early Directory Tagging Guidelines (pdf)
These guidelines are to be used for directories which retain the typographical and punctuation-based field delimitations, common in earlier 19th century city directories (1845-1905)

Guidelines for building datasets from directories, image metadata and geospatial sources for use in generating ESRI shapefiles and to populate associated databases.
